From early childhood, girls and boys are confined to roles that limit their dreams and their freedom. At home, at school, in the media or on social networks, sexist messages shape their behavior, their interests, and even the way they see themselves.
On the ground, BATIK International witnesses how these stereotypes weigh on young people — especially in urban and disadvantaged neighborhoods in Marseille and Paris, where the association works. Many of these youths question their relationships, their place within the group, and sometimes their self-esteem, while also facing multiple layers of discrimination: economic, racial, and territorial exclusion.
By co-creating safe and caring spaces for dialogue, BATIK International and its partners lead workshops where girls and boys can reflect together on gender inequalities and their impact on everyday life.
In collaboration with community centers and local associations, we foster group cohesion, empathy, and active listening through popular education methods. The goal: to start from their lived experiences, open discussions about gender, emotions, respect, violence, and discrimination — and support those who wish to take action through their own awareness projects.

In 2023, the young participants created a short film, wrote and recorded a rap song, and produced artworks exploring harassment, emotions, and the place of each person in public spaces.

In 2024, their awareness projects took shape through a video series “Girls and Boys Under Pressure” and a podcast “Quartier sans filtre” (“Neighborhood Unfiltered”).
You can discover these creations in the “Communication Campaigns” section of BATIK International’s website.
