External evaluation of the "european training for the building restoration and renovation sector" - AREF BTP (2005)

In 2002, the Paris area branch of AREF BTP, an association promoting on-going training in the building sector, implemented a European project called “European Training for building restoration and renovation jobs”.

Their aim was to give trainees a global view of the issues involved in restoration or renovation by tackling a large range of disciplines (culture, economics, organization, communication, management and technology) whilst at the same time improving trainees’ knowledge and skills through professional visits in Europe.

This project was presented and accepted within the framework of the EQUAL Community Initiative run and financed by the European Social Fund.

This training, intended for company employees, benefited 52 works foremen, general foremen, section leaders and stone masons.

In January 2005, the AREF entrusted BATIK International with the assessment of the impact of the project in coherence with EQUAL standards in terms of evaluation. The assessment of impact mainly deals with the efficient transfer(s) of skills acquired training into the work situation and on practice and behavior changes at work following the training period.

Therefore, the attention was focused on the evolution in trainees’ skills due to their involvement in the training program and the concrete effects generated by this evolution, in particular in terms of gains in productivity, quality and safety.

Rehactif training process evaluation (2007-2009)

In 2005, the Paris area branch of AREF BTP initiated the “REHACTIF”’ project which aims at structuring and setting up training processes integrated within companies working to rehabilitate old buildings, in order to compensate for the lack of management of building sites and integration problems for the entrants (EQUAL community initiative). The training, intended for company employees, benefited 24 section leaders or journeymen about to become section leaders.

BATIK International carried out the on-going and ex-post evaluation of the project. In the first instance, the evaluation mainly dealt with the efficient transfer of skills training into the work situation and on practice and behavior changes at work brought about by the training period.

Therefore, the attention was focused on the evolution of trainees’ skills and on the effects in terms of gains in productivity quality and safety. In addition, the evaluation laid the stress on the professionalization interfaces implemented to assist the training courses: tutorial system, report books, study trips in Europe, etc.
