Support to the Implementation of a Women Fair-Trade Cooperative in Tunisia

In the framework of the project FEM for entrepreneuse women in the Mediterranean basin, BATIK International and its NGO partners in Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Morocco, have developed a training and consulting project targeting women who have been granted with micro-credits. The initiative also involves the creation of a network of fair-trade textile producers between the microentrepreneuses, three French fashion designers and ethic-conscious consumers. The goal is to assist them in managing their small business and to make front to the shortage of fair trade markets in the Mediterranean basin.

The project has been followed up by the organization FEE of fair-trade entrepreneuses by creating a partnership with the microcredit NGO ENDA Interarabe in Tunisia.

Today the demand for fair-trade products increases, and BATIK International, ENDA Interarabe and FEE have created a cooperative of eight dressmakers enabling them to gather together in a legal entity with the necessary means to export their products with a fair-trade label. They will as well benefit from the training in styling and designing thanks to the collaboration of Marion Trouillot.

The cooperative will open its doors in 2010.
